Border confusion doesn’t help anyone

HVIA Members have reported confusion over border restrictions and testing requirements following a week of increased infections.

HVIA Chief Executive Todd Hacking said he had made Minsters aware of the deteriorating situation and the urgent need for a resolution.

“We have reiterated our call for a consistent national approach for transport operators and the heavy vehicle industry for cross-border access,” Mr Hacking said.

“Through their cooperative approach, led by the Australian Government’s National Cabinet, State Governments and regulatory authorities had been working well together, recognising our role as an essential service.

“By all means they should strengthen the process and testing regimes as appropriate; it is paramount that we ensure that we ensure the safety of our workers and the community.

“However, it is not workable when there is a different set of rules at each border, and they are being interpreted differently on the ground.

“We must keep our communities safe but we also must do that in a way that keeps freight moving in a regulatory efficient and consistent way that avoids mass panic,” Mr Hacking concluded.
